Xingzao Shi

Xingzao Shi was born in Shanghai, China, in 2002, where his childhood curiosity was spent taking apart and exploring mechanical models. At the age of 10, he moved to the United Kingdom, where his passion for science and technology grew.

He pursued a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at University College London (UCL). Under the mentorship of Dr. Reza Haqshenas, he focused his studies on medical robotics. As a participant in the Charles Steger Focused Ultrasound Internship Program, he designed and developed a soft robotic platform for the precise manipulation of therapeutic focused ultrasound.

During his third year, Xingzao joined ETH Zürich as an exchange student. He completed his Semester Project at MSRL, working with Dr. Fabian Landers on the development of novel release mechanisms for magnetically guided microrobots.

After completing his master's degree at UCL, he undertook an industry internship at APT Medical in Shanghai, contributing to the development of cardiac mapping and ablation catheters. Fondly reminiscing about his time in Zurich, Xingzao returned to MSRL in December 2025 to begin his doctoral studies. His research is now focused on pioneering the next generation of drug-eluting balloons and embolization catheters for highly localized and targeted therapies. In his spare time,

Xingzao enjoys traveling, playing electric guitar, and snowboarding in the Alps.
